Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

Lasers safely remove hair without harming your skin or the surrounding tissues. They do this by operating at a wavelength that’s only absorbed by the pigments in the hair follicle. As the follicle absorbs the short pulses of laser energy, it’s heated to a temperature that destroys the follicle. As a result, it can’t grow new hair.

How many treatments will I need?

Clients typically need 6 treatments and it depends on location, gender, and hair type.

Lasers can only destroy a hair follicle when it’s in a growth phase. You’ll need to come back for multiple sessions spaced about six weeks apart to catch more hairs in the growth phase.

When you come in for your first appointment, Dr. Ntaimo advises you on the number of treatments you may need based on your hair and skin color.

Which areas of my body can be treated with laser hair removal?

The laser technology Dr. Ntaimo uses can remove hair on many different areas of your body, including:

  • Legs
  • Arms and underarms
  • Face and upper lip
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Bikini area

Laser hair removal is an ideal solution for removing unwanted hair, but it can also be used to selectively reduce or thin out hair in men.

What should I expect during and after laser hair removal?

Most patients tolerate laser hair removal well, but each person’s sensitivity is different. Before your treatment begins, Dr. Ntaimo or a team member may apply a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort.

Your session may last up to an hour, but it depends on the area being treated. For example, removing the hair from your upper lip may only take a few minutes, while your back could take an hour.

After laser treatment, your skin may be slightly red and sensitive. You can expect it to be back to normal in a few days. In the meantime, you can get back to your usual daily activities. Dr. Ntaimo provides customized care instructions you can follow to soothe your skin and minimize side effects.
