PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Your blood contains several types of cells, including platelets. Platelets are rich sources of proteins called growth factors, which your body naturally uses to heal damaged tissues.

PRP is a plasma that contains a higher concentration of platelets than the amount normally found in your blood. It’s made in the office by drawing a sample of your blood, then processing it in a centrifuge.

After the centrifuge separates platelets from other blood cells, the result is platelet-rich plasma that’s safely used for your PRP therapy.

What is PRP therapy?

PRP therapy simply refers to injecting your own platelet-rich plasma back into targeted parts of your body. After Dr. Ntaimo injects PRP, the growth factors go to work, triggering the formation of new cells used to produce blood vessels, collagen, skin cells, and other supporting tissues.

Growth factors also stimulate stem cells, which can regenerate every type of cell needed to heal and rejuvenate. As a result, the concentrated platelets in PRP effectively restore and heal tissues located in the injection area.

Can PRP therapy restore hair loss?

When Dr. Ntaimo injects PRP into areas of your scalp affected by hair loss, the growth factors stimulate hair follicles and promote new hair growth. Treatment with PRP effectively increases the number of new hairs, improves hair thickness, and slows hair loss.

PRP injections can be used to treat female- and male-pattern baldness. They may also successfully restore hair loss due to medication and thinning hair in your eyebrows or beard.

During your treatment,  Dr. Ntaimo either uses a local anesthetic or a cooling device to help keep you comfortable. Afterward, you may experience mild tenderness and swelling, but these symptoms should go away within a few days.

Because hair grows in stages, you may need multiple PRP treatments to achieve the best results of your own, natural hair, without surgery and minimal downtime.

How does PRP therapy improve sexual health?

Dr. Ntaimo may recommend PRP therapy to treat erectile dysfunction in men and vaginal dryness, orgasmic dysfunction, and urinary incontinence in women.

The two PRP treatments available are:

O-Shot® for women

The O-Shot®, or orgasm shot, is a procedure in which PRP is injected into your vagina (near the clitoris) and also sometimes into the clitoris. As growth factors produce a fresh blood supply and restore tissues, you regain tighter, stronger vaginal tissues, improved clitoral response, a boost in your sex drive, and better orgasms.

P-Shot® for men

The P-Shot®, or Priapus Shot, injects PRP into your penis, where it produces new blood vessels that restore sexual response and improve the quality of your erections.
