Hormone Therapy Q & A

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) effectively treats low levels of hormones. As your hormones are restored back to normal levels, your current symptoms are relieved and future health problems may be prevented.

What conditions are often treated with hormone therapy?

For women and men, natural age-related changes can lead to needing HRT. The two most common health conditions treated with hormones are:

Menopause in women

In the years before, during, and after menopause, women experience a variety of symptoms as levels of estrogen decline. Symptoms may include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Low sex drive
  • Painful intercourse
  • Mood changes
  • Brain fog (difficulty concentrating)
  • Fatigue

Estrogen also promotes the health of tissues throughout your body. For example, it regulates bone metabolism and collagen production in your skin. As a result, low levels of estrogen also increase your risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Dry skin and wrinkles
  • Hair loss
  • Vaginal atrophy

Low testosterone in men

Although men don’t go through the dramatic decline of hormones like women, they do face the gradual loss of testosterone. After the age of 30-40, testosterone typically drops by about 1% every year. Low testosterone can also develop if you have hypogonadism and don’t produce enough.

Low testosterone causes symptoms such as:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength
  • Hair loss

Low testosterone can also make it hard to concentrate, cause fatigue, and lead to osteoporosis.

What is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a safe and healthy way to restore low levels of hormones. Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones produced in your body.

Dr. Ntaimo offers BHRT in the form of pellets. Pellets are made by placing a customized dose of hormones into pellets that are about the size of a grain of rice. Dr. Ntaimo implants the pellet under your skin, where it continuously releases hormones.

Although other forms of BHRT are available, pellets are preferred because they prevent fluctuations in hormones. Pellet release a consistent dose for 3-6 months.

By comparison, if you use pills or injections, you get an immediate large dose followed by a decline in hormone levels until you take the next dose. The fluctuations in hormones may cause side effects, such as blood clots.
